A new film starring Peter called "The Girl Who Believes in Miracles" opened in theaters across the country last Thursday. The film, co-written and directed by Rich Correll, tells the story of a child’s obedient sharing of the power in her Christian 'faith like a mustard seed" and resulting miracles. Peter plays Sam, the little girl's grandfather. You can read an interview with Peter about his role at this link.

Ken Burns' three-part documentary called "Hemingway" about American writer Ernest Hemingway  premieres on PBS tonight. The narrator, who has lent his voice to so many past productions, is Peter. Meryl Streep has the meatiest part as war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway's third wife. Her dispatches during the Normandy invasion rivalled, and arguably exceeded, his own. But the other wives are given voice by Keri Russell, Mary-Louise Parker and Patricia Clarkson. And Jeff Daniels supplies the voice of Ernest Hemingway, reading from his private letters as well as his published short stories and other writings.

This month Lion Roar's online magazine presented a short film by producer Ted Samore featuring Peter called "Hokyoji First Encounter". It can be viewed at this vimeo link. In this film, Peter takes you to Hokyoji Zen Practice Community, which is found on 105 acres of forested land in rural, Southeast Minnesota. "Quite a magical place,' he offers, as he recalls his first time visiting there. "This is it," he recalls the late Zen teacher and Hokyoji founder Dainin Katagiri Roshi declaring when assessing the property. He presents not just a visit to the grounds, but a sense of their ambience, and a dharma talk as well as he reflects on the interconnection so easily found in nature: "When I’m looking at you," he tells us, "I’m looking at the entire universe."

Last month the magazine featured an article by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong called "The Zen of Peter Coyote". It can be viewed at this link. Check it out!

Peter’s memoir of the 1960’s counter-culture "Sleeping Where I Fall" received universally excellent reviews, and has been in continuous print since 1999. His second book, "The Rainman’s Third Cure: An Irregular Education", about mentors and the search for wisdom, was nominated as one of the top five non-fiction books published in California in 2015. His third book, "Unmasking Your True Self" (the Lone Ranger and Tonto Meet the Buddha) conflates 50 years of Buddhist practice and acting and uses masks and improv exercises to foster liberation experiences and teach people "how to get out of their own way." It will be released by Inner Traditions Press next year, and so will his first book of poems, "The Tongue of a Crow", covering 59 years of writing, published by Four Way Books in NYC.

Showtime has now made the decision to air "The Comey Rule" on September 27th and 28th instead of in late November.

Showtime has just announced its four-hour event series "The Comey Rule" will premiere after the election on back-to-back nights in late November. Jeff Daniels stars as former FBI director James Comey, whose bestselling book "A Higher Loyalty" serves as the basis of the series along with a year of additional interviews with a number of key principals. The rest of the cast includes Brendan Gleeson as the President, Peter Coyote as Robert Mueller, Holly Hunter as Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, Michael Kelly as former FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Jennifer Ehle as Patrice Comey, Scoot McNairy as former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Jonathan Banks as former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, Oona Chaplin as former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, Amy Seimetz as former FBI lawyer Trisha Anderson, Steven Pasquale as former FBI agent Peter Strzok, and Kingsley Ben-Adir is President Barack Obama.

Showtime bills "The Comey Rule" as an immersive, behind-the-headlines account of the historically turbulent events surrounding the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, which divided a nation. The series is not a biopic of one man, but is instead the story of two powerful figures, Comey and Trump, whose strikingly different personalities, ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course.

"Troubled Waters: A Turtle's Tale", a PBS presentation, is a one-hour film that explores the impact of human behavior on our environment as seen through the lens of one of South Florida’s most beloved and fragile underwater creatures—the sea turtle. Featuring ocean activist Ted Danson and narrated by Peter, this one-hour film features interviews with marine biologists, ocean conservation experts and volunteers who rehabilitate injured, sick sea turtles and return them to the wild. It also examines the effects of global warming, water pollution, red tide and other human-made problems endangering sea turtles, including boat strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and the dramatic escalation of a tumor-causing virus.

There's a new section on Buddhism in which Peter shares his work and wisdom as a Buddhist priest giving dharma talks on Facebook and youtube.com. Check it out!

Back in the winter of 2016 production began on a film called THE ETRUSCAN SMILE, based on the bestselling novel by José Luis Sampedro. The film's lead was Brian Cox as Rory MacNeil, a rugged old Scotsman who reluctantly leaves his beloved isolated Hebridean island and travels to San Francisco to seek medical treatment. Moving in with his estranged son, Rory’s life will be transformed, just when he expects it least, through a newly found love for his baby grandson. The cast included Rosanna Arquette, JJ Feild, Thora Birch, Treat Williams and Peter in the role of a cultural anthropologist. It  had an international release in 2018, was featured at several film festivals and was distributed in the US last November. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 65%.

Ken Burns is presently working on a new documentary with Peter narrating. It's a two-part, three-to-four hour film that examines the visionary work and the turbulent life of Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest and most influential writers America has ever produced. Interweaving his eventful biography, a life lived at the ultimately treacherous nexus of art, fame, and celebrity, with carefully selected excerpts from his luminous short stories, novels, and non-fiction, we will see beyond façade of the public man, becoming intimately familiar with this brilliant, ambitious, charismatic, and egocentric genius. It is slated for national broadcast on PBS in 2021.

October 23, 2019

Peter has been cast as Robert Mueller in a four-hour CBS Studios limited series based on James Comey's book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership", a New York Times No. 1 bestselling book. Mueller was Comey's predecessor as FBI director and was later appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Other cast members include Jeff Daniels as Comey and Brendan Gleeson as Donald Trump.

Billy Ray adapted the book and will direct the series. Filming begins next month and an airdate will be announced later. The decision has not yet been made on whether the series will air on Showtime, CBS All Access or potentially both.

Tim Greiving of Vulture recently wrote an article called "The Golden Voice Behind All Those Kens Burn Documentaries". He writes, "What would a Ken Burns documentary be without its measured, authoritative narration? In The West, The National Parks, Prohibition, The Dust Bowl, The Roosevelts, The Vietnam War, The Mayo Clinic, and now Country Music, actor Peter Coyote delivers hours of often dense, complex text — full of facts, figures, quotes, and grand unifying ideas — in a manner that Burns refers to as 'God’s stenographer' His calm, cowboy-around-a-campfire timbre is basically the voice of America, at least within the orbit of PBS."

You can read this article, which includes interviews with both Peter and Ken Burns, at this link.

Multiple ancillary products and events have been lined up to accompany the PBS series including companion albums to be released this fall by Sony Music, and a concert special celebrating the documentary. The special, which is set to air a week before the documentary, was shot live at the Ryman Auditorium in March and features performances by Cash, Dierks Bentley, Rodney Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Vince Gill, and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show among others.

If you've ever seen Roman Polanski's BITTER MOON (1992), you know it's a film you have to discuss after you've seen it. Coyote is simply awesome and will blow you away. Adam Zanzie has put together a video essay called "Analyzing A Performance: Peter Coyote in 'Bitter Moon'". You can view his video at this link. For more information regarding the 1992 film, just click on the image below.

Another youtube video of interest is a taping of an event that took place at Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA on July 10, 2019. Michael Pollan and Peter are joined by Rebecca Solnit in discussing Michael's book, "How to Change Your Mind.", newly released in paperbook. Check it out at this link.

Originally aired on Canada's CTV in 2017, the six-part drama called THE DISAPPEARANCE premiered on WGN America on July 9th. Besides Peter, the cast includes Aden Young, Camille Sullivan, Micheline Lanctôt and Michael Riendeau. It's a psychological family drama centered around the unexplained and sudden disappearance of Anthony Sullivan during a treasure hunt on the day of his tenth birthday. The script for the Canadian series had to pass Coyote's "must surprise me in the first ten pages" test. It did. He also liked that it was a limited run series. He gave a shout out to Montreal as a great city for an actor and praised Canadians in general as "grown-up Americans."

Allison Keene of Paste Magazine wrote, "This limited series that focuses on the aftermath of the kidnapping of a young boy is likely to appeal to fans of crime shows in general and, potentially, Peter Coyote fans, specifically, starring as the boy’s doting grandfather. Joel Keller of Decider.com wrote, "It helps that showrunner Joanne Forgues saw fit to cast Coyote as Henry Sullivan. He’s gotten to the point in his career where people likely know him more from his advertising and documentary voice-overs than his acting, but Coyote gives Henry a presence that is necessary in a show like this, where holes in the plot would become more glaring surrounded by lesser performances."

Last month as national television networks and cable channels marked the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing with retrospective specials, NBC Bay Area (KNTV) featured "Exploring Space," the latest entry in the station’s acclaimed "Bay Area Revelations" documentary series. In the words of narrator Peter Coyote, "it shows how the Bay Area reached for the stars and emboldened humanity to explore the universe."

When the 46th annual Gravenstein Apple Fair comes around August 17 and 18, 2019 in Sebastopol, California, visitors will share in delicious local food and drink presented by the chefs and farmers who produce the fine fare, live music, and hand-made crafts and artwork. Peter will be hosting a Jam Making demonstration at 2:30 p.m. on the 17th. The Sebastopol resident has become a passionate Jamming Jelly artist, using goodies from his garden and fruit tree orchard.
